Wellness goes far beyond what we can see; it’s about understanding the deeper layers that shape how we feel, think, and live. This week’s Wellness Wednesday, Beyond the Body: Explore Your 5 Layers Within, was led by our BLU Yoga Instructor Alex Ramirez. She invited members to turn inward and explore the powerful philosophy of the five Koshas.

During the session, Alex thoughtfully connected each Kosha to BLU’s 5 Drivers of Health and Wellness©, creating a powerful bridge between ancient wisdom and modern, actionable wellness.

1. The First Layer: The Physical Body (Annamaya Kosha)
The outermost layer represents our tangible, physical form, our bones, muscles, organs, and tissues. It is nourished by the food we eat and the care we give our bodies.

Aligned with BLU’s Physical + Nutritional Driver, this layer focuses on sleep, steps, strength, and nourishment. While this is where most wellness journeys begin, it is only the starting point of a much deeper experience.

2. The Second Layer: The Energy Body (Pranamaya Kosha)
This layer governs our life force energy, prana, which flows through our breath, circulation, and overall vitality. It marks the transition from the physical into more subtle aspects of our being.

Connected to the BLU's Physical Driver, this layer emphasizes sleep, energy, and recovery. As discussed, our sleep patterns and recovery habits play a critical role in determining how energized or fatigued we feel. Wellness isn’t just about rest—it’s about how energy moves within us.

3. The Third Layer: The Intellectual Body (Manomaya Kosha)
The mental and emotional layer processes our thoughts, feelings, and sensory experiences. It shapes our perceptions, reactions, and relationships.

Tied to BLU’s Community Driver, engagement, encouragement, and empowerment, this layer highlights how deeply our minds are influenced by our environment, especially the people around us. A supportive community doesn’t just uplift us, it helps regulate and ground us.

4. The Fourth Layer: The Personality Body (Vijnanamaya Kosha)
This layer represents our inner wisdom, intuition, and ability to discern truth. It’s the voice within that guides us toward alignment and purpose.

Aligned with BLU's Personal Driver, purpose, priorities, and plan, this Kosha reminds us that true wellness includes living in alignment with our values. It’s the part of you that knows what’s right, even when it’s difficult.

5. The Fifth Layer: The Heart Center (Anandamaya Kosha)
The innermost layer is the bliss body, the source of joy, love, and deep connection. It represents a state of pure being beyond thoughts and experiences.

Connected to BLU's Spiritual Driver, meditation, mindfulness, and motivation, this layer isn’t about constant happiness, but rather a profound sense of wholeness, where nothing feels missing. It is often accessed through stillness, reflection, and meaningful connection.

To bring this experience full circle, members were guided through a personalized Kosha Check-In, encouraging reflection across all five layers, an opportunity to pause, assess, and reconnect from the inside out.

The session concluded with a grounding yoga flow led by Alex, allowing participants to physically embody what they had just explored mentally and spiritually, moving through each layer with intention and awareness.

By understanding and nurturing each of the five Koshas, we move beyond surface-level health and step into a more integrated, aligned, and meaningful way of living.

About the Five Koshas

Rooted in Eastern philosophy, the five Koshas are described as the energetic layers surrounding the soul, often referred to as “sheaths.” These layers exist simultaneously, nested within one another like Russian dolls, beginning with the physical body and moving inward toward the most subtle layer, the bliss body, or soul.

First introduced in ancient yoga texts, the Koshas offer a framework for spiritual growth and self-awareness. By bringing attention to each layer, we can deepen our connection among mind, body, and spirit, ultimately unlocking new pathways to healing and alignment.
