What if your routine lab results were only telling part of your health story?
During our October Wellness Wednesday at BLU by ThriveWell®, Juliet Interiano, APRN, FNP-BC, explored how biomarkers can provide valuable insights into cardiovascular health, metabolism, inflammation, body composition, and overall longevity.
Through interactive demonstrations and practical examples, attendees discovered why understanding their health requires looking beyond individual numbers and considering how different measurements work together.
The central message was simple: One number doesn't tell the whole story.
Most people are familiar with routine cholesterol and blood sugar tests. However, these measurements don't always provide a complete picture of what's happening inside the body.
Juliet explained how advanced cardiovascular biomarkers, including LDL particle numbers, ApoB, and lipoprotein(a), can offer additional insights into cardiovascular risk beyond a standard cholesterol panel.
She also explored the relationship between glucose, insulin, and metabolic health, highlighting why blood sugar levels alone may not reveal how efficiently the body is managing glucose.
Another important topic was inflammation. Markers such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) can help identify inflammatory activity, but understanding the underlying cause requires evaluating the results alongside other health information.
The takeaway? Meaningful health insights come from understanding patterns, not simply identifying whether an individual result is high or low.
The conversation extended beyond blood testing to explore two important components of healthy aging: body composition and cardiovascular fitness.
Body weight alone cannot distinguish between muscle and fat or reveal how much visceral fat surrounds internal organs. Advanced assessments, such as the Lunar iDXA scan used at BLU, help provide a more detailed understanding of these measurements.
Maintaining muscle is particularly important as we age. Beyond supporting strength, balance, and independence, muscle plays a significant role in metabolic health.
Juliet also discussed VO₂ max, a measure of cardiovascular fitness that reflects the body's ability to use oxygen during exercise. Understanding this measurement provides a valuable baseline for developing strategies to maintain endurance and physical capacity over time.
Ultimately, the goal isn't simply to improve a number. It's to preserve the strength, mobility, and vitality needed to continue enjoying life.
Another important part of the discussion focused on genetics and how inherited characteristics may influence individual health risks and responses to lifestyle choices.
While our genetic makeup remains largely unchanged throughout life, genetic predispositions do not necessarily determine our health outcomes.
When considered alongside blood work, fitness assessments, body composition, medical history, and lifestyle, genetic insights can help inform more personalized approaches to nutrition, exercise, recovery, and preventive care.
This reflects an important principle of precision medicine: understanding what makes each individual unique can help guide more informed health decisions.
At BLU by ThriveWell®, we believe that understanding your health is an essential step toward optimizing your healthspan.
By bringing together advanced diagnostics, personalized medicine, fitness, nutrition, and recovery, BLU helps Members establish meaningful baselines, identify opportunities for improvement, and track progress over time.
Juliet's presentation reinforced that biomarkers are not simply numbers on a report. When interpreted together and within the appropriate clinical context, they can help individuals better understand their health and take a more proactive role in their future.
Because longevity isn't about chasing perfect numbers. It's about making informed decisions that support better health and more healthy years ahead.
Wellness Wednesday is part of BLU's ongoing commitment to education, prevention, and community engagement.
Held on the third Wednesday of every month, this educational series brings together BLU's medical and wellness professionals to explore relevant topics in health, longevity, and preventive care.
