For this weeks Wellness Wednesday, in honor of Mother’s Day and Women’s Health Month, Jessica Chen, MD, Chief Health & Wellness Officer at BLU, Board-certified Internal Medicine physician and Diplomat of the Board of Anti-aging and Metabolic Medicine, and Breanna Blake, BLU's Medical and Research Assistant, presented A BLUprint for The Optimized Woman. The session explored how hormonal health across every stage of life directly impacts energy, metabolism, mood, cognition, and long-term vitality.

Dr. Jessica and Breanna provided a comprehensive overview of key topics in women’s health, focusing on hormonal balance and energy regulation. They highlighted several essential hormones, including:

  • Estrogen – supports brain function and insulin sensitivity
  • Progesterone – supports sleep
  • Cortisol – supports stress and energy regulation
  • Insulin – supports blood sugar stability

Imbalances in these hormones can lead to fatigue, cravings, weight changes, and brain fog. Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels, disrupting sleep, metabolism, and energy regulation, especially across life stages such as career-building years, caregiving periods, and perimenopause.

Dr. Jessica and Breanna also explored the concept that women experience aging in distinct physiological phases, rather than a linear progression, each characterized by unique hormonal and metabolic changes. This included discussion around:

  • Menstruation: monthly hormonal shifts affect mood and energy
  • Pregnancy: a major metabolic “stress test” for long-term health
  • Perimenopause: 5–10 years of hormonal fluctuation impacting sleep and weight
  • Menopause: estrogen decline affects bone, brain, and heart health

Participants were guided through a visualization exercise and were asked to take away: "Envision yourself 10 years from now." We welcome you to try it as well Envision yourself 10 years from now. How have your daily habits shaped your future self? How you move, think, and feel today directly shapes how you will live decades from now.

From Short-Term Health to Longevity Thinking

Most women focus on immediate health concerns such as doctor's appointments, symptoms, or labs. Longevity medicine shifts the focus to a longer horizon: How do I want to feel at 70, 80, or 90?

A 2021 study shows women live an average of 81.4 years, with potential to add 14+ more years through lifestyle optimization.

At BLU, the focus is not only on lifespan but on healthspan: living longer in strength, clarity, and independence.
