We are committed to educating and empowering our community to live stronger, healthier lives. This week’s Wellness Wednesday brought that to life with an engaging and informative session on lean muscle mass, presented by Shane Hofman, our BLU-Certified Personal Trainer.
During the session, Shane explored why building and maintaining lean muscle is not just about aesthetics; it’s one of the most powerful investments in long-term health and quality of life.
Shane highlighted how lean muscle mass plays a vital role in metabolic health, helping the body regulate blood sugar, manage weight, and improve overall energy efficiency. As muscle tissue is metabolically active, increasing lean mass naturally supports a higher resting metabolism, allowing the body to burn more calories even at rest.
He also discussed how muscle serves as a critical line of defense against falls and injuries, particularly as we age. Stronger muscles enhance stability, balance, and coordination, significantly reducing the risk of everyday accidents and supporting greater independence.
Beyond physical strength, Shane emphasized the powerful connection between muscle health and brain function. Regular strength training has been shown to improve cognitive performance, memory, and overall brain health, making it a key component of both physical and mental longevity.
Lean muscle also plays a central role in bone density, helping to protect against osteoporosis and age-related bone loss. By placing healthy stress on the skeletal system, resistance training encourages stronger, more resilient bones.
Most importantly, Shane connected lean muscle mass to longevity and quality of life. Maintaining strength allows individuals to stay active, confident, and capable throughout every stage of life, supporting not only how long we live, but how well we live.
