On Friday, October 16, leaders from sports, healthcare, education, and community development gathered at Florida International University for the Fútbol Con Corazón (FCC) International Forum for Mental Health. The event explored how sport and play can strengthen mental well-being, build resilient communities, and create meaningful change.

Dr. Gordon Chen, cardiologist and Co-Founder and CEO of BLU by ThriveWell®, delivered a keynote titled “Beyond the Game: BLU’s 5 Drivers of Health & Wellness.” His message was clear: health goes beyond physical measurements. It is shaped by the connections between our physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.

The Power of Play, Purpose and Connection

Dr. Chen presented BLU’s 5 Drivers of Health and Wellness: Personal, Community, Physical, Nutritional, and Spiritual. Together, they reflect a holistic approach to health that recognizes how daily habits, relationships and a sense of purpose influence how we live and age.

This perspective aligned with the forum’s central theme: play is more than recreation. Through sports, movement and shared experiences, people build trust, develop relationships and experience a sense of belonging.

Teams can become communities of care, creating opportunities for connection, resilience and personal growth. These benefits extend beyond the playing field, reinforcing the role that community and meaningful engagement can play in mental well-being.

Leaders United Around Mental Health

FCC International Founder Samuel Azout opened a program that brought together leaders committed to improving the lives of children, families and communities.

The forum featured Doral Mayor Christi Fraga, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Rafael Villalobos, Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez, and representatives and leaders from organizations including Florida International University, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, The Children’s Trust of Miami-Dade County and Common Goal.

Discussions explored evidence-based approaches to children’s mental health, stronger family relationships, and the role of sports teams in creating supportive environments. A common message emerged: mental well-being is strengthened not only through individual care, but also through relationships and communities that help people thrive.

BLU extends its sincere gratitude to Samuel Azout and Danielle Dubuc Wightman, Executive Director of FCC USA, for the invitation and partnership in bringing this important conversation to the community.

From the Playing Field to Recovery

The afternoon featured the MVP Social Impact Award and a panel with football icons Rafa Márquez, Radamel Falcao and Mario Kempes, moderated by international sportscaster Tony Cherchi. Roberto de Assis Moreira, known for his work in Brazilian football and as Ronaldinho’s manager, also appeared on the program.

Their participation highlighted sport’s ability to unite cultures, inspire future generations and create lasting connections.

That connection between sport and well-being is also reflected in BLU’s work. BLU by ThriveWell® has hosted members of the Colombian National Team for recovery, underscoring the importance of physical recovery and preparation in supporting athletic performance and long-term health.

Recovery is an essential part of a sustainable approach to performance and longevity. Combined with movement, connection, and enjoyment, it reinforces the importance of caring for the whole person.

Advancing a Broader Vision of Wellness

Dr. Chen’s work reflects a growing emphasis on proactive, personalized approaches to health and longevity. At BLU, a physician-led health and longevity facility in Fort Lauderdale, this philosophy translates into personalized health insights, lifestyle guidance, and ongoing accountability to help members make informed decisions about their well-being.

The message he shared at the FCC International Forum extends beyond healthcare: healthier lives and stronger communities are built when people have opportunities to move, play, connect, recover and find purpose.

Because well-being is about more than living longer. It is about creating the conditions to live healthier, more connected and more meaningful lives.
